Alternative Apothecary Series 1 : Essential Oils
Aromatherapy is the practice of using aromatics for therapeutic benefits. Essential oils are a great way to practice aromatherapy and can be used in many different ways for different ailments. Here are some common uses for essential oils, as well as my personal favorite oils and what I use them for!
Common Uses:
Essential oils can be used for many different health benefits! Common uses include: headache relief, sore muscle relief, relaxation, sleep, congestion, and MORE!
Woolzies, the essential oil brand we carry in-store, has some great blends that are already mixed for specific benefits. For example: they have an entire kit just for sleep!
Personal Favorites:
I’ve been using essential oils for various uses for several years and always enjoying learning more about them and trying new ones. So, here’s a list of my personal favorite essential oils and what I use them for!
Eucalyptus:
I like to use eucalyptus for congestion. Most commonly I mix it with a carrier oil and apply it to my chest. It’s also great to use in a diffuser for congestion!
Lavender:
I typically use lavender when I wash my sheets and blankets. I add it to a dryer ball, when throwing them in the dryer. Not only does it keep my sheets smelling good, but it's also supposed to help with sleep. I also use it on my face and hair, with a floral water spray from Anne's Apothecary (available in the shop!)
Other oils I use in the laundry room include: Orange, Lemongrass, Sandalwood, and Cedarwood.
Peppermint:
I use peppermint for headaches and sore muscles. I love the cooling effect of this one and love the smell. I often apply this one topically and use it in baths (with bath salts.)
*When using essential oils topically, make sure to dilute them with a carrier oil like, coconut oil, grape seed oil, etc.
Rosemary:
I use rosemary to help keep my hair healthy and to promote hair growth. I add a few drops to a carrier oil (typically coconut for this particular process) and gently massage it into my roots. I leave it in for at least an hour and then wash my hair normally.
Lemongrass:
I use lemongrass during the warmer months to help repel bugs. We often have it diffusing in the shop, to help with bugs and because it smells good. I also add it to my laundry, for the same purpose!
These are my own personal favorites, so make sure to do your own research and find what works for you!
